Growing food is something my family has been doing since they migrated from Malta to Australia during WWII.
My grandparents established some of the first market gardens in the western suburbs, travelling each week by horse and cart to Parramatta to sell their produce.
As a kid I played in the dirt with my grand parents and parents who taught me the key to growing food – Hard work, perseverance, and the joy of sharing what you grow.
Its been some time since those early market gardens in Sydney’s western suburbs and the face of Sydney has changed along with its appetite for fresh and exciting produce.
I see Sydney transitioning into a second Food Growing Wave where freshness is key, nutrient density is critical and sustainablity underpins food systems established in places we live, work and play.
To contiune my family’s work in shaping Sydney’s early food system I established My Square Metre as an Urban Farming and Sustainability Education consultancy to help create a sustainable food future.
I specialise in creating edible spaces from Kitchen Gardens to Urban Farms anchored in a Nature Based Approach to food growing. This approach encompasses principles and techniques from Organic and Sustainable Agriculture, Biodynamic farming and Permaculture Design.
I also deliver tailored skills based engagements to get Chefs, Teachers, schools and communities growing their own fresh food
